Shingle roofing means a roof covered in overlapping asphalt shingles: a fiberglass mat soaked in asphalt and topped with mineral granules. It is the most common roof on Calgary houses, and the most used roofing material on steep roofs across North America. Calgary roofing businesses publish full replacements with architectural asphalt shingles at about $8,000 to $18,000 for a typical home.

This page covers the types of asphalt shingles, how long they last in Calgary's hail, wind and sun, what they cost, and when a shingle repair is enough. For prices in detail, see roof replacement cost in Calgary.

What are asphalt shingles made of?

Asphalt shingles are made of a base mat, asphalt, and mineral granules on top. Modern shingles use a fiberglass mat; older ones used organic felt made from paper or wood fiber. The asphalt waterproofs the shingle. The granules block the ultraviolet light that breaks asphalt down, add some physical protection, and give the shingle its color.

When you see grit in your eavestroughs, those are granules. A little after a new roof goes on is normal. A lot, years later, means the shingles are wearing out or were hit by hail.

What types of asphalt shingles are there?

New roofs in Calgary use laminated asphalt shingles in three grades: architectural (also called dimensional or laminate) shingles, impact-resistant shingles, and luxury or designer shingles. Architectural shingles are two or more layers fused together, so they are thick, heavy and carry solid warranties. Luxury shingles are the heaviest laminated shingles, made to look like slate or shake. Older roofs may still have flat, single-layer 3-tab shingles, which are no longer used on new Canadian roofs.

Lifespans are typical figures, not promises. Calgary's hail, chinook winds and strong sun can shorten them, and a well-ventilated attic helps them last.

Architectural shingles are the standard choice for a new Calgary roof. Popular shingle brands sold in Canada include IKO, GAF, CertainTeed and Owens Corning. Each brand's products, warranties and colors differ, so compare the specific product line rather than the brand.

How long does a shingle roof last in Calgary?

An architectural asphalt shingle roof typically lasts about 24 to 30 years. Older 3-tab roofs typically lasted about 15 to 18, so if your roof has flat single-layer shingles, it is likely near the end. In Calgary, hail is the biggest reason roofs are replaced early: a single storm can end a roof's life years ahead of schedule. Good attic ventilation, a proper install and fixing small damage quickly all help a roof reach the long end of its range.

Signs your shingles are near the end:

  • Curling or cupping edges
  • Bald patches where granules are gone
  • Cracked or brittle shingles, especially after cold snaps
  • Shingles lifting or blowing off in normal winds
  • Daylight or damp in the attic

Can roof shingles be repaired?

Yes. A roofer can replace individual damaged or missing shingles, reseal lifted ones and fix the flashing around them. Repairs work best on a roof that is still in good shape overall. Two limits: older shingles become brittle and crack when lifted to slide new ones in, and discontinued colors may not match. Calgary roofers publish small shingle repairs at about $150 to $1,000.

If many shingles are failing on every slope, repairs only buy a little time. See is it cheaper to repair or replace a roof for how to decide.

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Most architectural shingles come three bundles to a "square," the roofing unit that covers 100 square feet of roof. IKO, for example, lists 33 1/3 square feet of coverage per bundle for its Cambridge architectural shingle. To estimate, measure the roof area, divide by 100 to get squares, multiply by three for bundles, then add about 10 to 15% for waste, starter rows and ridge caps.

A 20 x 20 foot roof section is 400 square feet: 4 squares, or about 12 bundles before waste, around 14 with it. Check the coverage printed on the bundle you buy, because some products differ. Roof area is larger than the house's floor area once you count pitch and overhangs, which is why roofers measure the roof, not the floor plan.

Questions people ask

Is it difficult to shingle a roof?

It is harder than it looks. Shingling needs the right underlayment, ice and water protection at the eaves, correct nailing, flashing at every wall and chimney, and proper ventilation. Mistakes cause leaks, void manufacturer warranties and shorten the roof's life. Working at height is also dangerous. For a garden shed, a confident DIYer can manage. For a house, most people hire a roofer.

What are shingles on a roof?

Shingles are the overlapping pieces that form the outer layer of a sloped roof. Each row covers the joints of the row below so water runs off. On most Calgary houses they are asphalt shingles. Other types exist, including metal, cedar shake, slate and synthetic rubber shingles, but asphalt is by far the most common.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in Calgary?

Late fall through early spring is usually the cheapest. Summer and the weeks after a big hailstorm are the busiest, and one Calgary roofing business says quiet-season pricing is commonly 10 to 15% below peak summer. Asphalt shingles need mild temperatures to seal properly, so winter installs depend on the weather and the roofer's methods.

Can I still get 3-tab shingles?

No, not for a new roof in Canada. Flat, single-layer 3-tab shingles are no longer made for the Canadian market, so a new or replacement roof uses architectural (laminated) shingles. If you have an older 3-tab roof and need a repair, the roofer will match it as closely as they can, but a close match gets harder each year, and it may be time to plan a replacement.

Can you put new shingles over old ones?

Some building rules allow a second layer of shingles over the first, but many roofers will not do it. A layover hides damaged decking, adds weight, can shorten the life of the new shingles and may affect the warranty. Many roofers recommend a full tear-off, so the decking can be checked and repaired before the new roof goes on.
